Reivers Place 7th and 19th at Nationals as Samoei Takes Bronze
The Reiver Men's and Women's cross country teams competed in Peoria, Illinois on Saturday at the NJCAA National Championships. The race was contested by thirty five men's and women's teams making fields of over two hundred and fifty individuals for each race. The women ran first and were led by Kaylee Fly who along with the rest of her team ran aggressively for the entire race. Her effort was good enough for a time of 19:55 and a 47th overall finish. Gladys Downing was the second finisher for the Reivers clocking in at 20:32, 70th position. Dana Miller also placed herself in the top half of finishers at 117th and a time of 21:13. Filling out the Revier squad were Madison Brummer (21:19 119th), Sarah Jepleting (21:24 119th), and Nicolia Edwards (22:02 223rd). The team placed 19th with 478 points.
The men's team ran well enough to secure a place as the 7th best team in the country. Their leader was Isaiah Samoei who received the bronze medal and all american honors for his 3rd place overall finish. He earned the accolades by running a time of 24:49. This stellar performance capped off a remarkable freshman season where Samoei set numerous course records and never finished lower than 4th in any race he ran. Two more Reiver runners, Nathan Carr and Kyle Blue were among the top forty runners in the country with places of 27th (26:29) and 35th (26:41). Running a huge seasons best for the Reviers in a crucial position was Garland Bennet who placed 89th by running 27:57. The rest of the Reiver top seven, Justin Hazard, Bryant Rader, and Nick Reynolds placed 94th (28:01), 130rd (28:48), and 169th (29:40), respectively.
The Reviers will have their last competition of the season at the National Half Marathon Championships next weekend.
