Team Blue will eat wings at Buffalo Wild Wings
The visiting Team Blue put up a run in the first inning and kept adding to eventually go up 7-0 after five and one half innings of play. Freshman third baseman Damek Tomscha (3-for-5, 3 runs scored, 3 RBI, double, home run) was a dominant force for Team Blue's offensive production.
Tomscha hit a two-out double to right field before moving to third base on a wild pitch and scoring on a first-and-third rundown between first and second base. He would single and score in the third inning and hit an RBI SAC fly in the fourth. In the sixth inning, the 3-hole hitter would cap his performance a triple shy of the cycle by hitting a towering 2-run homerun to left field.
Team Black would put together an impressive 5-run sixth inning to try and force a deciding game 5. Freshman left fielder David Bruchu (1-for-4, walk, run scored) hit a one-out single and would move up to second base on a wild pitch. Freshman first baseman Tony Schicktanz (2-for-5, run scored, RBI) would single in Bruchu. Sophomore third baseman Tanner Moore (2-for-4, run scored, double, walk) would walk and move to second base on a wild pitch. Freshman catcher John Mulgrue (2-for-5, RBI) grounded out to shortstop, scoring Schicktanz. Moore scored on a wild pitch. Freshman second baseman Sean Owen (1-for-4, 2 runs scored) would walk before sophomore center fielder Mitch Warne (2-for-5, double, run scored) doubled. Freshman shortstop Chris Waylock (3-for-5, double, 3 RBI)would score both Owen and Warne with a two-out double.
After the marathon sixth inning, Team Blue would answer in the seventh. Freshman Grant Zieser (2-for-4, walk) would lead the inning off with a walk and sophomore shortstop Brandon Bass (1-for-5, triple, 2 runs scored, RBI) would drive him in with a triple to right-center field. Freshman center fielder/pitcher Tyler Ware would drive in Bass on a sacrifice fly to center field and extend the lead to 9-5.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Michael Hoppes (5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 K, 0 BB, HBP) would throw five scoreless innings before running up his pitch count and having to leave the game after an RBI single by Shicktanz. Hoppes, who won Game 1 of the series, would eventually rack up another win in Game 4. He would be replaced by freshman righty James McCarthy (0.1 IP, 0 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 2 BB) who would face three batters and be followed by freshman right hander Paul Poirier (0.1, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 BB) to finish the sixth inning. After walking the lead-off hitter in the seventh, Poirer would be replaced by Tyler Ware (3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 K, 0 BB) would throw the last three innings.
The losing pitcher from Team Black was freshman lefty Tanner Kockler (3.1 IP, 2 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 K, 5 BB). Others that toed the rubber in the final game were freshman righty AJ Gaura (2.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 K, 0 BB, 1 HBP), freshman lefty Kyle Gehrs (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 K, 1 BB), and freshman right hander Jared Gottberg (2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 K, 1 BB).
Players from both teams will meet some time next week at Buffalo Wild Wings for dinner. Some will enjoy the different sauces to dip their wings in while others will be stuck with ranch or blue cheese to dip their celery in. The Reivers will wrap up their Fall Season on the diamond November 15.
