Twin golden goals propel Reivers to nationals

Chamea Palmer, from St. George, Utah, and Leigh Veidman from Liverpool, England, provided some heroics for Iowa Western in district soccer action.

On Saturday, they booted home the golden goals and ignited wild celebrations on what was perhaps the greatest day in Iowa Western soccer history.

Palmer’s goal in the second minute of the second overtime sent the unrated Reiver women to the Division I national junior college tournament with a 3-2 district-championship win over No. 6 Lewis & Clark (Ill.) Community College at the IWCC field.

About three hours later on the same field, Veidman’s goal in the third minute of the first 10-minute overtime propelled the 11th-ranked Reiver men to a 2-1 win over No. 9 Oakton (Ill.) Community College and their first-ever berth in the national tournament.

Brad Silvey is the Iowa Western women’s coach, while Jordan Carver leads the men. They both assist the other program, and Carver said Silvey couldn’t resist putting a little pressure on the men after the women won.

“He was like, now it’s your turn,” Carver said, smiling. “Thanks Brad. But you know what? Both teams had a lack of concentration in the second half. But it just showed how persistent and resilient they are.”

This is the seventh year for the soccer programs at Iowa Western. The Reiver women are making their third trip to nationals, but had lost to Lewis & Clark in the district final the past two seasons.

“It was a great day,” Carver said.

The men’s tournament is in Tyler, Texas, while the women will head to Topeka, Kan. Both tournaments are Nov. 18 through 21.
