Thompson and Tomscha earn conference recognition
Freshmen right-handed pitcher Jake Thompson (Shawnee, Kansas) and third baseman Damek Tomscha (Sioux City, IA) were honored by the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference the week of February 21st. Thompson was recognized as the scholar-athlete of the week and Tomscha as the athlete of the week.
Thompson performed well both in the classroom and on the mound in his first semester at Iowa Western. He currently holds a 3.625 GPA and has gotten off to a great start this spring. He currently is 2-1, with a 2.20 ERA. In 16.1 innings of work, he has given up 10 hits, 7 runs (4 earned), 2 walks, and struck out 19. Teams are hitting .164 against Thompson and he recently threw a no-hitter against Connors State this past weekend. Jake's future plans include attending a DI University and eventually going on to play professional baseball.
Tomscha was the 2010 Gatorade Player of the Year, Louisville Slugger Iowa Player of the year, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. Damek has started off his first season as the offensive leader in many categories. Consistently hitting third in the lineup after 16 games, he is hitting .400, scoring 14 times, with 4 doubles, 4 home runs, and 14 RBI's. His on-base percentage is .492 and he recently hit a game-winning home run against Connors State in the top of the 13th inning this past weekend. In the future Tomscha is looking to continue his educational and athletic careers at a 4 year university and then going on to play professional baseball.
