Two tough losses end Spring Trip at Jefferson College
HILLSBORO, Missouri- Starting right-handed pitchers from both teams were impressive as they both put up a line of goose eggs through six innings of work in Game 1. Iowa Western's Jake Thompson threw 6.0 innings, gave up 3 hits, 0 runs, walked one and struck out 4. Jefferson College's Mark McClelland threw 7.1 innings, giving up 2 hits, 1 unearned run, walked 4 and struck out 7. Nathan Goro (2-for-3, BB, RBI) had the heroic single to lift the Vikings past the Reivers in the bottom of the eighth inning, 2-1.
Sophomore right fielder Adam Lavelle had a two-out double in the second inning and the Reivers would not have another hit until freshman catcher Levi Meyer came up in the top of the eighth with freshman second baseman Sam Bumpers on third and freshman designated hitter Brett Bass on first. Meyer hit an RBI single back up the middle to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore left-handed pitcher Taylor Eikenberry (1.1 IP, 3 H, 2R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 2 K) went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out in the eighth, Tyler Hibbert (2-for-4, R, SB) hit an infield single to shortstop. Casey Goss' only hit was very timely as he doubled to right-center field, scoring Hibbert and advancing to third on a wild throw. That set up the Goro game winning hit. Eikenberry suffered the loss and the win went to Jefferson's Tyler Boraz.
________________________________________________________________________________Game 2 did not have much offense as both teams combined for one 1 run on 8 hits. Tyler Hibbert (2-for-2, R, 3B) led the game off with a triple to the left-center field gap and Casey Goss followed with an RBI single. That was all that would be needed for a Vikings 1-0 win, and sweep of Iowa Western.
The Reivers left six base runners stranded and were led by sophomore catcher John Mulgrue (2-for-3) and sophomore center fielder Mitch Warne (1-for-3). Losing pitcher in the second game was freshman left-hander Tyler Ware (5.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K). Freshman right-handed reliever Michael Hoppes threw 0.2 innings and struck out one Vikings hitter. The win went to Jefferson's Travis Hayes (7.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K).
The Reivers are scheduled to be back in action at Doc Ross Field in Council Bluffs, IA on Sunday, March 27th for a double-header vs. Hibbing. Game time is set for 2:00 PM CST.
