FORMER REIVER ZACK STOUDT NAMED OLE MISS STARTING QB
Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt, confirmed that former IWCC Reiver Zack Stoudt is going to start this Saturday against Southern Illinois University.
The Rebels will need Stoudt since Ole Miss' top two running backs both could miss the SIU game. Stoudt relieved starter Barry Brunetti on the final series of the first half against BYU and immediately guided the Rebels to a field goal. He finished 13-of-25 for 140 yards, no interceptions and no touchdowns, though he had a perfectly thrown 43-yard TD pass dropped by true freshman wide receiver Nick Brassell. The TD would have given Ole Miss a 17-0 lead in the last 90 seconds of the third quarter.
"He's a little older and you can tell he has had a few snaps coming from a junior college," Nutt said of Stoudt, the son of Cliff Stoudt, who played 13 seasons in the NFL for four teams and two seasons in the USFL for Birmingham. "He didn't get rattled and he knows where to go with the ball. I think that is the biggest difference right now (between Stoudt and backup QBs Brunetti and Randall Mackey)."
"My heart was pumping a bit when I ran out onto the field," Stoudt said of his major college debut. "From a community college, to the SEC playing BYU was a reality check. But it was great, a dream come true."
Stoudt was voted 1st team All-Midwest Football Conference and was an Honorable-Mention NJCAA All-American. Stoudt threw for 2300 yds and 21 Tds during his only season at Iowa Western while helping the Reiver’s to a 9-2 record.
