Western Nebreaska came into tonights match as the most dominant DI program in the NJCAA. They had a record of 27-0 this season and were on a 36 game win streak since the national tournament last season. The Iowa Western Reivers came into tonights match with a record of 32-6 and ranked 11th in the latest national poll.
The stage was set for a battle between these two teams and the Cougars had the upper hand as they had defeated the Reivers in three earlier this season. But tonight, the Iowa Western Reivers did what no other team in the country had been able to do so far in upsetting the Cougars and bringing an end to their once perfect season. No other team had even taken more than one set from them this season...and tonight...the Reivers took three.
IW got out to an early start in the first set, but lost steam at the end and dropped the first set. "I was really proud of our kids' mental toughness in the second set. Not only had we dropped the first, but we got behind early in the second. Despite that, they held together and came back to win the second set, " said Head Coach Darrin McBroom. Both of the last two sets were tightly contested, but the Reivers finished both of them on top.
Coach McBroom indicated that he was really proud of his team's performance tonight. "We are a young team and we have had to learn some hard lessons this season, but tonight our team went out and did everything they had to do to get this win. They followed the game plan and executed it just as we had talked about it in the pre-game meeting. It really was a team effort; no single individual won this match tonight...everyone did their part. This was a great win for our team, and I just hope we can keep improving from here."
