Thompson hurls Complete Game shutout; Reivers Win 10-0

Wednesday the Reivers played McCook CC for their first of nine games over the next five days. Coach Rardin's ball club did exactly what they wanted to do, start the week off with a win, and conserve pitching. Jake Thompson took the mound for the Reivers and was in control from the start. Over 7 innings pitched, Thompson allowing just two hits while striking out 7 batters and surrendering just one walk. Early in the game, he was forced to pitch around an infield single and a throwing error, but worked out of it and would go the distance without allowing a run. For the first time this season, the Reivers offense was slow to get going. They scored one run in the first inning that was setup by an error by the McCook third baseman to take a 1-0 lead. But Iowa Western would only lead 2-0 through 5 innings of play. In the 6th inning the Reivers got things going, scoring 5 runs. The rally started with a leadoff single from Gabby DeVarona. The next batter, Levi Meyer was hit by a pitch, followed by back-to-back singles from Damek Tomscha and Grant Kay to drive in a run and load the bases. Alex Greer provided the big blow, hitting a grand slam and breaking the game open and putting the Reivers in front 7-0. It was Greer’s 3rd home run of the season. The Reivers would add three more runs in the 7th inning to end the game by the Final score of 10-0. Greer and Tomscha led the Reivers offense on the day. Greer finished 3 for 4 with 6 runs driven in; While Tomscha went 4 for 4 with a double and a triple. The Reivers improve their record to 8-0 on the season, and have scored double digit runs in all 8 games. The team will take on McCook again in a DH beginning at 1:00 pm at Doc Ross field.
