2009-2010 Women's Basketball Season Out-Look

There is a sense of excitement in the air at Iowa Western Community College for the Women’s Basketball program. The Lady Reivers finished with an 18-13 record last year keeping the streak alive for IWCC Women’s basketball never having a losing season in its programs history. The Lady Reivers went the NJCAA National Tournament 5 straight years from 1998 through 2002. This team has the talent to return to the national tournament but they must become a TEAM with 10 new players and 4 returning players. Other key factor’s on the upcoming season is if the team can stay injury free and to over come other obstacles that come up during the long college basketball season.

There are a lot of question marks for this year’s team and that was magnified by a season ending injury during pre-season work-outs to last years starting forward Karolina Rykowska. This puts a lot on the shoulders of the only other returning starter Amber Peterson. As point guard, Amber led the team in assists and minutes played last year. Other returners that saw significant time off the bench last year is 5’9" guard Airelle Eldridge and 5’10" forward Chloe Parker. Of the 10 new players there are two transfers from other NJCAA schools that will add much needed experience to this young team. Summayyah Muhammad is a 5’10" forward transferred from Allen County C.C. where she was the teams 2nd leading scorer and rebounder. Valerie Wood is a 5’9" forward that transferred from last year’s NJCAA National Tournament participant Howard College. With 8 other talented freshman on the roster there will be plenty of competition for playing time this year.

Head coach Jim Turgeon is coming off his second season at Iowa Western Community College. In his two season’s at Iowa Western he has a combined record of 39- 23. Before arriving at Iowa Western coach Turgeon spent seven years at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas. Coach Turgeon built that program from a loser into a year in year out winner. Before Coach Turgeon took over reigns at Dodge City the Women’s basketball program had suffered through a record of 28-63 the 3 previous seasons. His last 5 seasons at DCCC produced a record of 105-55 including 4 consecutive seasons of 20 or more wins. His fast breaking offense and pressure defense style of play will be exciting for all Reiver fans to watch. In the class room coach Turgeon’s players are expected to go to class everyday and leave Iowa Western with a degree.
