Reiver Softball 2012 Region XI Champions
Congratulations to the Reiver Softball Program for winning the 2012 Region XI Championships!
Game one against Indian Hills Community College on Saturday proved a fight until the end to stay in the winner's bracket as Iowa Western Community College and IHCC volleyed the lead four times, but the Reivers came out on top for a 3-2 win. IWCC took the lead in the seventh inning and held on for the victory. The Reivers went up for good on a two-run single by Jordan Kerns, plating Jena Gonzales and Vanessa Molina. Greta Smeins got the win for Iowa Western Community College. She allowed two runs over seven innings. The pitcher struck out five. The top of the first saw IWCC take an early lead, 1-0. Rebekah Sanchez started the rally for the Reivers with a single. An error then moved Sanchez from first to second. Then a groundout by Daleigh Fossler scored Sanchez. After the Warriors went up 2-1 in the second inning, it was all but over for the Reivers, as the fought 'til the end in the top of the 7th when Jena Gonzales singled to start the rally. Vanessa Molina then singled, as well, sending Gonzales to second. A sacrifice bunt from Breana Canova sent the two runners to second and third with one out. Clutch hitter Jordan Kerns then hit a 2-RBI single to bring both Gonzales and Molina across the plate and never looking back for the 3-2 win.
Game two on Saturday against Muscatine Community College was just as eventful, but MCC didn't have a chance as Iowa Western Community College won in fashion, 6-0 in seven innings. The Reivers scored three runs in the third on a passed ball and a two-run home run by Taylor Jonas. Kylee Simpson put herself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for the Reivers. She homered in the first inning and doubled in the sixth inning. Muscatine Community College wasn't able to score a run off of Kylee Polsley during her 5 1/3 innings on the rubber. Polsley allowed only four hits, one walk and struck out eight. Iowa Western was sparked by Jonas and Simpson, who teamed up for three hits and four RBIs. IWCC never surrendered the lead after the first inning, scoring one run on a solo home run by Simpson. IWCC scored one run in the fifth inning, and then followed it up with one more in the sixth. In the fifth, IWCC scored on an RBI single by Jena Gonzales, plating Cailin Simpson for the shutout win 6-0.
After a long day of rain outs on Sunday, the Reivers came back Monday to defend their Region XI title. Breana Canova did all she could to give Iowa Western Community College a boost, but it wasn't enough to get past Indian Hills Community College, as Iowa Western Community College lost 7-3 in seven innings. Iowa Western Community College was led by a flawless day at the dish by Canova, who went 2-2 against Indian Hills Community College's pitching. She singled in the fourth and sixth innings. The top of the first saw Iowa Western Community College take an early lead, 1-0. Rebekah Sanchez got things going for Iowa Western with a double. A passed ball then moved Sanchez from second to third. Then a sacrifice fly by Cailin Simpson scored Sanchez. IHCC survived IWCC's surge and put up one run of its own in the first. Indian Hills Community College stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the second, scoring two runs. The game finished after 7 innings, with the Reivers taking a 7-3 loss.
Game four was an "if necessary" game and proved to be the most exciting game of the entire tournament. Daleigh Fossler went 2-3 as Iowa Western Community College took home a 5-4 victory over Indian Hills Community College in seven innings. She singled in the third inning and doubled in the seventh inning. Kylee Polsley had an impressive outing against Indian Hills Community College's lineup. Polsley held Indian Hills Community College hitless over 3 2/3 innings, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out two. Kylee Polsley recorded the win for Iowa Western Community College. The Reivers got behind early in the game, as IHCC took an early lead 4-1 in the third inning. IWCC was relentless, as they continued to fight in the 5th inning, as they tied the game at 4. Kylee Polsley came in to toe the rubber, allowing no hits for the rest of the game. The Reivers were determined to win, as Daleigh Fossler started the bottom of the 7th inning with a hard-hit double up the middle. The incredible rally didn't end after that, as Taylor Jonas stepped up to the plate and hit a clutch RBI single to finish the game and earn the Region XI Title for the Reivers.
