Iowa Western men's soccer team drops another game on the road at the Lakers of Iowa Lakes Community College. The Reivers let another early lead slip away to move to 3-4 in ICCAC play. Sophomore Vicente Gallardo got the Reivers off to a quick start with a close range header in the 13th minute. Gallardo was set up on a corner kick put into the box by freshman Theo Le Calve for his second assist on the season. After the goal the Reivers seemed to attempt to hold onto the lead and invited pressure by the Lakers. The Reivers were allowing the Lakers space in the corners and allowed multiple dangerous crosses into the area. Keeper Daniel Bermingham along with the center back pair of Vicente Gallardo and Jaaziel Thompson did well to clear multiple dangerous situations. The Lakers got their goal in the 33rd minute from a high hanging cross into the back corner of the box. Cesar was able to control the ball and finish in the bottom corner past the diving Bermingham to make it 1-1.
The second half was a back and forth contest as the Lakers continued to attack the flanks and the Reivers finding space on the counter attack. The final ball was missing from both teams in the first 35 minutes of the half. The decisive moment came in the 80th minute as the Reivers struggled to clear their lines from a set piece. The Reivers conceded a penalty as the pressure mounted from the play. Likulia was able to convert the penalty and the give the Lakers the win to go to 6-1 in ICCAC play. The game finished on a sour note as the teams came together with two seconds left on the clock. The confrontation ended with three yellow cards for the Lakers and two red cards for the Reivers.
The Reivers move to 3-4 in the conference which puts them tied for fifth place with Northeast CC. The Reivers will be at home this Saturday, October, 6th to face the Eagles of Scott Community College.
