Reivers Pick up 7th Straight Win in Overtime
The Iowa Western Men's Basketball team took to the road Saturday afternoon to face Southeast (NE) in Beatrice, NE. This would be the Reivers second true road game after traveling to Kansas City Kansas Community College the previous weekend. Iowa Western was led in the contest by redshirt freshman Malik Brooks who finished with a double double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Along with Brooks, sophomores Roland McCoy and Dewayne Vass each chipped in 18 points.
This marks the Reivers best start to the season since the 2015-16 campaign when Iowa Western started off the season with 9 straight wins.
Iowa Western got off to a scorching hot start Saturday afternoon as Roland McCoy had two 3 pointers and Malik Brooks got to the rim for a 11-0 start. The Storm of Southeast (NE) fought back as they had their own run of 3 pointers. It was a back and forth first half that saw the Reivers head into halftime with a 1 point lead.
The second half was more of the same as the Reivers and Storm traded blows. The Reivers were able to build a lead, but saw it quickly erased as the Storm responded.
Thomas Faber, who finished with 11 points, hit a foul line jumpshot put the Reivers ahead by 1 with 3 seconds left. Southeast (NE) was able to get a shot at the rim after a tip out of bounds gave them the ball under the Reivers basket. A foul was committed and it sent the Storm to the foul line. Ultimately the score was tied up and an extra 5 minutes was necessary.
Dewayne Vass carried the offense in the overtime period and stout defense propelled the Reivers to the narrow win.
Freshman Sean Black had 10 points off the bench, while Odier Olange and Jaden Flournoy each had 6 points.
With the win the Reivers moved up four spots in the rankings from number 12 to number 8.
Iowa Western is back in action tomorrow, Tuesday November 23rd at home as they host Kansas City Community College at 6:00pm in Reiver Arena
