Reivers Earn Their First Team Title Of The Season; Welsh Takes The Individual Title
McPherson, KS – Iowa Western Men's Golf won the Central Kansas Classic, led by Will Welsh, Lloyd Hughes, and Steven Gormley. The event was contested at Turkey Creek Golf Cours in McPherson, Kansas.
The Reivers put together a 54-hole team total of 849 (+9), to win the tournament by nine strokes. Iowa Western would post a first-round score of 280, second round 283, and final round 286.
Leading the way for the Reivers, making his debut appearance was freshman Will Welsh. He fired a three-round total of 205 (-5). Welsh would open the tournament with a 1-over par 71 but would turn it around to fire back-to-back 67's (-3) to reach a 5-under par total.
Iowa Western also received help from sophomore Lloyd Hughes. Hughes was the tournament 36-hole leader. After opening the tournament with a 1-under par 69 and backing it up in the afternoon turning in an incredible 4-under par 66. Hughes would close the tournament with a final round 4-over par 74 and a total of 209. He would receive runner-up honors finishing just 4 shots behind teammate Welsh.
Continuing the scoring for Iowa Western was sophomore Steven Gormley. He continued his steady play, by posting a 215 total (+5), good enough to finish tied for 6th individually. Gormley would open the tournament with an even par round of 70, 74 (+4) in round two, and then close with a 1-over par 71.
Sam Wells would post 221 (+11). His three rounds consisted of 70-77-74. Wells would finish inside the top 20 at 17th individually. Ethan Main would complete the scoring for Iowa Western's top five. Main would finish with a 54-hole total of 224 (+14) following rounds of 73-76-75, finishing tied for 23rd.
The Reivers also took two individuals to compete. Freshman Jett Hollister would nearly crack the top 20 after firing 222 (+12) and finishing 21st. Another freshman getting a chance to compete was Keaton Barnes. Barnes would shoot 227 (+17) and finish 32nd.
Iowa Western is back in action next week as they will host the Bent Tree Intercollegiate on September 22nd and 23rd at Bent Tree Golf Club, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
