Reivers pick up another 2nd place finish; Welsh earns his second individual title of the fall season!
Sioux City, IA – Iowa Western Men's golf team wrapped up the Mustang Derby hosted by Morningside University at Whispering Creek Golf Course in Sioux City, IA. The Reivers would finish runner up to the host school Morningside. Freshman William Welsh would end up taking the individual championship, which was his second individual championship this fall.
Iowa Western posted a round 1 score of 300 and followed that with a round 2 score of 294 to total an 18 over par 594 total. Welsh led the Reivers in the opening round with a 1 under par 71, Emmanuel Jensen and Lloyd Hughes would shoot a pair of 4 over par 76's, and Ethan Main shot a 5 over par 77 to round out the scoring.
On day 2 Welsh would again lead the Reivers with a steady even par round of 72, Sam Wehman would post a 1 over par 73, Main turned in a 2 over par 74, and Hughes would shoot a 3 over par 75. Whispering Creek was a difficult test for all the teams who participated. "I love the challenge of this golf course," said Iowa Western Director of Player Development Ryan Norman. "The home team has the advantage on how to play to various hole locations, but I felt like we did a good job of managing the course. What hurt us some mis execution coming down the stretch."
The Reivers will have a couple of weeks off to clean up some of those miscues as they'll prepare for the NJCAA Division 1 Men's Golf National Preview Tournament hosted at Sand Creek Station in Newton, KS. That event will take place over Halloween on October 30th and 31st.
