Council Bluffs, Iowa – After three seasons with the Iowa Western Women's Wrestling, Head Coach Monica Mendoza has resigned to focus on family obligations. Second-year assistant coach Myranda Velazquez will step into the role as head coach.
"We are excited to promote Coach Velazquez to lead our Women's Wrestling Program," said Iowa Western President Dr. Dan Kinney. "She was instrumental in the success of our program last year, and with her strong background in the emerging sport, we know our program, under her leadership, will continue to be one of the top programs in the nation."
"I am extremely grateful to be here in this position," said Velazquez. "I've been prepped and ready to impact the lives of the current and future athletes of Iowa Western. My goal is to help them achieve everything they have set out for themselves. I want my team to know that dreams do come true."
Velasquez joined the Reivers in the Fall of 2024 and helped the team to its highest finish at the NJCAA National Wrestling Invitational, finishing as the National Runner-up. Six wrestlers earned All-American status, with three finishing the tournament as individual national champions last season.
"We are excited to welcome Myranda Velazquez as the new head coach of Iowa Western Women's Wrestling," said Iowa Western Athletic Director Shane Larson. "Myranda brings an incredible blend of competitive experience, leadership, and passion for developing student-athletes both on and off the mat. Her vision for the program aligns perfectly with our commitment to excellence. The future of Reiver Women's Wrestling is in great hands."
In four seasons as a program and three under the NJCAA, 27 wrestlers have earned All-American status, with six bringing home individual national championships in their respective weight classes.
